Blogs from the Webcaptain
Greetings Fellow Privateer's, Enjoy the website updates for 2009. Also you should visit the new chat room at Yahoo! Groups which hopefully will help continue the discussions, that have been a popular part of the website for years, in a more casual manner. And let us not forget the passing this year of our renowned boat designer Thomas Gillmer. ~~~~~~~~~~ December 30, 2009 - Slipping in just before the close of the year (I'd hated to have him wait another year before making it on the website ;-) Frank Barnes sailed in with BRIGADOON. His 1971 ketch can be found in paradise, otherwise known to us landlocked sailors as the Caribbean in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. Although he didn't say I'm wondering if this is a P35, being that the specs have a 50 Yanmar indicated. His listing can be found at #brigadoon December 7, 2009 - Ken Partney from Ventura, California has joined up with his 1978 ketch WANDERING STAR which he sails on the Pacific. Details at #wanderingstar November 22, 2009 - Ron and John Quinlan from Taylor, Michigan sails his yet-to-be-named cutter on Erie-det River Lake Sinclair. One of the earlier hulls that has passed through... #7 built in 1966. "My son and I were given this boat that had been abandoned. We are now in the rebuilding process, hull stripped out, boat covered to protect, ready to re-install ballast. Need information to install inboard power-pictures". More info at #quinlan September 27, 2009 - Some sailors just can't get enough Privateer and Mike Troyer is one of them. He now adds MISS LIZ II, a 1971 sloop, to his fleet. Mike says, "She's my second 26, Now I have two. Dang I must like these things. But Miss Liz (the original) needs a mast and is being restored. So it is for sale". Details on MISS LIZ II can be found at #missliz2 and don't miss his photos in the Gallery. August 23, 2009 - Chris Barker from sails his 1970 cutter TONGA TRADER on Melvern Lake in Richmond, Kansas. He commented, "I just bought this boat out of a mini storage lot and have fallen in love with it. Much botchelism involved to be undone. I acquired this project boat with no docs. Cannot find and HID number. Love this boat and plan a total restoration on it plus addition to enhance it.". Details at #tongatrader June 20, 2009 - Mike Kelly from Laguna Hills, California sails DANCES WITH WAVES, his 1970 Ketch #125, in the Southern California Pacific. More info at #danceswithwaves Mike says he's looking for Dolphins and Eagle and plans for mizzen staysail. He also added, "glad to be a member of the club!". June 17, 2009 - Clinton Stone from Gulfport, Florida has christened his cutter MaDuSa.
Greetings Fellow Privateer's, This in for 2008... ~~~~~~~~~~ December 30, 2008 - Clinton Stone, from Largo, Florida, checked in with his cutter just before the end of the year so he makes it to the registry without having to wait another for your weary webcaptain to get his info posted. Clinton sails in Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. July 30, 2008 - Nathan Martino from San Rafael, California owns ketch #122 BLUE PEARL and sails her on the San Francisco Bay. Neil says, "Wow, love this boat!!, Had it three months and am very impressed with the design It sails very well. First ketch experience. Rigged for ocean. Just loved weekenders on it. Very popular design down at marina. Have set out to convert to steering wheel as done on others. Need a new mainsal within a season or two. Did i mention i just love this boat! ... Genereated some rudder issues (prop kicked the rudder...my fault) for some winter work plus I failed to pull rudder before i trailered it..??.... This is a great sailboat design. Will update with new name. Thanks". Listing is at #twosticks July 15, 2008 - Pammela Howerton from Plano Texas has announced that she purchased the Privateer cutter DELIGHT from Tim Moulis in September 2007. Greetings Fellow Privateer's. New boat registrations and photos for 2007 follow below. Enjoy! ~~~~~~~~~~ July 12, 2007 - Larry George from La Porte, Texas has registered his 1970 ketch, hull #119. Greetings Fellow Privateer's, The numbers kept growing in 2006 with another 9 Privateer 26's registered, 2 Privateer 35's registered, and a transfer of ownership within each class. A quick scan of the registry reveals about 75 Privateer 26's now accounted for. Enjoy! ~~~~~~~~~~ November 18, 2006 - Andrea Williams from Weymouth, MA has registered SOUTHERN CROSS. She reports, "Where to start.... My husband and I recently acquired Southern Cross but have very limited information about her. Our boat was sitting on stands unkept for several years. When we first looked at her the bilge was full of water and water was draining from a hole drilled in the keel. We are unsure of the year. If you can tell by the hull number please let us know. The title says 1974, however some of the paperwork goes back to 1972. A Westerbeke engine manual came with the boat however we haven't been able to find any identifying numbers or marks on the engine itself to confirm its make. Our first step after combating the mildew will likely be to tear into the sole to get to the ballast. The message board has some helpful info there. She will need a LOT of tlc before her launch. We are still trying to figure out what was factory and what was altered. For example, was there a hatch above the inboard engine on the floor of the cockpit? It looks as though there was one that was sealed up, or perhaps it was opened to work on the engine. You will likely see more than a few questions from us on the message board over the next year or so while we bring this beauty back from the edge. Thanks for creating such a great resource for Privateer owners!" Thanks, welcome aboard, and good luck Andrea. #southerncross November 14, 2006 - The ketch LARRY COOPER from Boston, MA has been registered. I don't have many more specific details at this point, but it's good to have another Privateer registered at #larrycooper November 10, 2006 - John Hicks from Lutz, Florida reports on his cutter SWIFT, "Sold her in the mid-'80s. Hull was actually two halves, contrary to as noted in the website. Original engine was a Volvo, became a mooring anchor. Rudder splits easily and needs rebuild.Based at Shell Point Florida then Titusville Florida 1980-1988". More specs on Swift at #swift September 14, 2006 - Mike Thoele registered SEQUEL, his 1975 ketch that he sails on Fern Ridge Lake in Cheshire, Oregon. Mike contributes to the blog by saying, "From Oregon, I spent three years searching the West Coast for the Privateer ketch of my dreams. No luck. Ironically, I finally found Sequel (formerly Grace) in April ’05 in a lake only 50 miles from my Illinois hometown. Bought her sight unseen (but not unsurveyed), traveled East, then towed her West across the Rockies a 2,500-mile adventure in its own right. Our home sailing lake in Oregon was down for dam repairs for the ’05 season. So Sequel’s launch didn’t come until April ‘06, a year to the day after she crossed the Continental Divide in Wyoming. The previous owner, with the naval architect Robert Perry as a consultant, re-rigged her for offshore work (1/4-inch stays, 1/2-inch bronze turnbuckles, bronze portlights, new sails, hull & deck reinforcement, etc.). Feels good to have a craft that’s had the attentions of both Gillmer and Perry, two of the country’s foremost small-craft naval architects of the past century. Vessel is mechanically and structurally top-notch, needs minor cosmetic attention. The future project list includes repainting and a wheel steering conversion. Puget Sound voyages lie ahead". Specs on Sequel can be found at #sequel July 30, 2006 - Fred Grothe sailed in with MERMAID, his 1969 sloop with no doubt the longest hull number I've seen... DLZ07857H999. Fred added, "Mermaid was sunk during Hurricane Wilma but was raised again. I wish to restore her to her original beauty. I am looking for the cabin entrance doors, the sliding top hatch and one deck air scoop. Does anyone know where I might find these items? Do they still make this boat? I would appreciate any info on this". Fred's contact information can be found on his registry listing at #mermaid July 11, 2006 - Dr. Jim McCluskey, curator for the Great Lakes Small Boat Sailing Museum, has aquired the ketch WINDSONG and reports, "Boat is being cleaned up for display at Great Lakes Small Boat Sailing Museum. This is the only Privateer I've seen with teak decks and teak toe rail. Will send pictures when available". My understanding is that, besides being on display, Windsong will be making day sails with visiting museum guests to throughout the summer. That's pretty exciting stuff and another telltale feather in the hat for the Privateer. More details on Windsong can be found at #windsong June 20, 2006 - Gene K Morgan from Naples, Florida registered his Privateer 35 ketch EXCALIBUR and sails her in the Gulf of Mexico. Photos have been submitted and will be posted shortly at #excalibur June 15, 2006 - John David Weaver from Olympia, Washington registered SAND DOLLAR 2 which I can only assume is the same boat that Alan Harris, also from Washington, was considering purchasing (see February 6, 2004 blog below). Sand Dollar 2 will be sailed on Budd Inlet and Puget Sound. #sanddollar2 June 7, 2006 - DG Fitton from Essex, Connecticut registered his cutter SIRENA. Sirena, not to be confused with John & Ann Faranetta's Sirena from the Carribean, is sailed in the Connecticut River and Long Island Sound. More specs available at #sirena2 ~~~~~~~~~~ November 29, 2006 - Greg and Janice Hendrix from Utica, Kentucky are the proud new owners of HESPERUS of which they purchased from Jeanne Scheffer. They sail on Kentucky Lake and provide further specs and photos at #hesperus September 25, 2006 - Chad Lawie reports that he aquired the Privateer 35 CAMBYRATION from the Sellers family (see September 5, 2005 blog below) and has provided some photos, to be posted shortly at #cambyration ~~~~~~~~~~ Glenn Pearce has provided more photos and specifications on his junk rigged Privateer at his website http://www.geocities.com/junk_ketch and promises to send some photos under sail whenever the rainy weather gives him a break. ~~~~~~~~~~ Richard Ennis who owns CLASSY LADY helped clear up the confusion over the multiple listings in registry. There is only one, he says, and he aquired her from Danny Jones. Thanks for the update Richard.
Greetings Fellow Privateer's, Here's what has come in for the first quarter of 2006. Enjoy! ~~~~~~~~~~ May 3, 2006 - Bob Dianetti has registered PEQUOD, his cutter that he sails on Lake Erie out of Stow, Ohio. He commented. "Purchased in Astabula, Ohio. Specs are posted on the registry at #pequod April 28, 2006 - Richard Ennis sailed in from Bear City Arkansas (the home state of Kenner Sailing Yachts) with his ketch CLASSIE LADY (not to be confused with Classy Lady, which also appears in the registry). He sails her on Lake Ouachita at Brady Mt. Marina. Specs can be found at #classielady March 17, 2006 - Brock Steele recently acquire the cutter DAS BOOT and plans on sailing her in...what's this.....Louisville, Kentucky on the Ohio River..........the home port of my own ketch Hippokampos? Now what are the chances of that(?) There's the usual restoration to be done but meanwhile check his listing at #dasboot to see a pic that I secretly snapped in the boatyard while Brock wasn't looking. As they say, "see you on the water". January 28, 2006 - Glenn Pearce from Sidnec, BC, Canada has registered his ketch FEI YEN (Chinese for "Flying Swallow"). He has some interesting plans in store for his rig as he says, "I am doing a complete refurbish including a new "Junk Ketch" rig of my own design--Chinese lugsail main and mizzen, Western jib. Pix to follow soon". Until then, his listing can be seen at #fei-yen along with a sketch to see what's on the horizon. --
Greetings Fellow Privateer's, Here's a summary of what arrived in 2005. Another 16 boats were registered this year, along with 2 transfers of ownership. At rough count I think that makes about 65 Privateer 26's now accounted for. Enjoy! ~~~~~~~~~~ December 30, 2005 - Jack Payne and his ketch SEA EAGLE joins us from Sacramento, California. Another Pacific sailor he adds, "Thanks for a great website. I've owned the boat for 8 years. I have the original builders manual and various sales brochures". Specifics can be found at #quickstep November 20, 2005 - Don Carpenter brings us CRESCENT WENCH from Orlando, Florida. See #meleana September 26, 2005 - Ludington Horowitz sailed in with his ketch THE ROUND ISLAND PIRATE and says, "I recently purchased this boat. It's currently dry docked and a handyman special". More specs can be found at #roundislandpirate September 5, 2005 - Well, okay...it's not a 26 but we welcome all Privateer 35's to the website. Helping fill out the P35 registry is CAMBYRATION, registered by Ford Sellers of Ithaca, New York who sails her on Lake Ontario. Ford commented, "My father, John Sellers, bought the hull (he also designed the mermaid on the aft quarter). He built the rest out of teak. The boat has been sailed out of Crescent Yacht Club in Chaumont NY her entire life. She has had a Partial re-build this past summer, and will likely be for sale Next year, as she is too much for my mother to handle". Sorry, no photos, but you can read the specifics at #cambyration June 23, 2005 - William Kling has registered his 1968 ketch INE'S MASHA. He commented, "This Privateer spent it's first 24 years on the Great Lakes. I bought it in 1992 and moved her to the Annapolis, Maryland where she spent the next seven years sailing the Chesapeake Bay. I then had her in Sarasota, Florida on the Gulf Coast for the next 5 years before moving her to Lake Conroe, Texas. Greetings Fellow Privateer's, Here's what you can find new on the website that arrived in 2004. Enjoy! ~~~~~~~~~~ August 23, 2004 - Ben Bunn from North Carolina checked in with his ketch THURSDAY'S CHILD. He may or may not be with us long as he reported, "vessel on trailer, needs restoration, interested in selling, don't know what range for fair asking price, need advice". If you're looking for a fix-er-up check out #thursdayschild and get in touch with Ben. August 1, 2004 - David Turley, from Summit Point, WV, sails his cutter DAWN TREADER on the ICW near Washington, DC. Specs on Marimba are at #marimba May 30, 2004 - Bruce Hansen, a member of the Duluth Community Sailing Association in Minnesota, emailed to say, "we have just become the proud owners of what I believe to be a ketch rigged Kenner 26' Privateer. Her name is MOLLY BROWN III, and her last owner was a private party here in Duluth. Her hull number is 124 and she was built in 1970 or thereabouts. She currently has a Yanmar diesel engine and bow thruster. Otherwise she is in quite good condition. We have pretty much restored her. We would be especially interested in handling characteristics, quirks, etc. Molly has nice lines and we are very much looking forward to sailing her." #mollybrown3 May 20, 2004 - Fred McCreery, from Nipomo, CA sails his ketch THALIA on the Pacific Ocean. He also commented, "when my Dad gave it to me, I brought it down here to Broad Creek (off the Rappahannock River). I am going sailing today with my 2 children. Have a great time Mark. More specs at #antilles May 16, 2004 - Richard Bergren, from Upper Marlboro, Maryland joins us with his sloop REGINA which he sails on Chesapeake, Bay. He commented, "Regina is Dark Blue and White with teak wood trim. Painted with black anti fouling bottom paint below the waterline. The Vessel Identification number is MD 3158 AF, registered in Maryland. Hull number 96 is clearly stamped on brass Kenner plate attached to the cabin bulkhead. Boat was built in Arkansas. The date of 1971 is on the registration papers, but I cannot verify that through other documentation. I do not know when the boat was first registered in Maryland, but a Ship Radio Station License issued in 1993 attached to a bulkhead lists the current vessel Identification number and an owner who lived in Oxford Maryland. The auxiliary engine was removed and the propeller shaft hole plugged by a previous owner who converted the boat to strictly sail. I purchased this sailboat on 6 May 2004. She is currently in dry dock on Kent Island, but my plan is to tow or sail her across the Chesapeake Bay to Annapolis, Maryland some time in the next two weeks." Richard also sent a photo and said that he "saw a listing in the registry of another boat with the same hull number, but clearly a different vessel". That would be Two Sticks so...the mystery of the hull numbers continues. More specs can be found at #regina May 11, 2004 - Richard Rogers, from Solomons, Maryland sails his cutter JOLLY ROGERS on the Chesapeake Bay. He comments, "Original owner/builder. Looks better than new. To this day people stop and admire the boat -- especially her lines! Such a long time -- same boat -- same marina -- same slip!" Specs at #xarifa February 6, 2004 - Alan Harris from Anderson Island, Washington sails his ketch on the sound. I'm making the assumption that his purchase of SANDDOLLAR 2 went as planned and have added him to the registry. He comments, "We are in the process of buying this boat and would like to thank the folks on this website. The information on this site had a lot to do with our decision to purchase this Privateer 26. I will continue to log on to the site and look forward to being part of this growing org." #sanddollar January 29, 2004 - Don Anderson from Santa Barbara, California joins us with his sloop EL which he sails on the Pacific. Jak added, "she's doing fine, I've got almost everything the way I want it, weathered a tornado which swept through the club with no damage, just all the gear inside heaped to starboard, 4 boats had sunk, 1 turtled, 3 demasted & many others had water or other more minor damage". Greeting fellow Privateers, This is going to be a rather long post because it includes website updates that go all the way back to March '03. I sincerely apologize to the new folks who have been waiting patiently for their vessel to appear in the registry. It's been a busy summer...not so much on the water but with work in general. But enough of that...on with the new stuff... ~~~~~~~~~~ December 30, 2003 - Fred Tappin adds his sloop FALCON to the ever-growing fleet and sails her on the Anclote River and Gulf of Mexico. He writes, "I am now the proud owner of a Privateer26, which is at the moment at the Coconut Grove Sailing Club having the engine re-installed. At the completion of the engine installation the boat will be delivered to its new home on the Anclote River, Tarpon Springs, Fla. I would appreciate any one with knowledge of this boat to let me know if they have any info concerning the history of this boat and possibly of its owners. I would also appreciate anybody`s comments on the sailing performance of this 26, for I have been a yawl and a ketch man for most of my life." Welcome aboard Fred. Keep checking the website form for discussions concerning performance and upkeep. #falcon December 26, 2003 - Bob Mayers from Highland, NJ has joined the registry with his ketch FOUR WINDS and writes, "Yes, another Privateeer has shown up. My father (Bob also) has already written a posting about those elusive dolphins. Luckily he is retired and excited about helping with the restoration. The boat was last registered in 1989 and has been sitting on the hard in a boat yard for quite some time. She is basically sound and complete but will need everything including exterior stripping and repainting. I am presently cleaning her out and am finding interesting things like a 30 year old life ring and flare kit. It has a Penta outboard which is scrap metal. I will take some digital "before" pictures and send them to you. By the way, this is a great website and view it often." As always, we're looking forward to the photos. #fourwinds November 6, 2003 - John Chiaraluce brings another 35 to the site with his schooner WINDQUEST and you have to check it out under full sail at #windquest November 4, 2003 - Robert Mudge joins us from Milton, Massachusetts with SO LE MA and has included a photo.#sollemar November 4, 2003 - Jim Knox sails his cutter INCOMMUNICADO on the Chesapeake Bay. I'd like to see Incommunicado and Hook meet up for a photo date.#incommunicado June 26, 2003 - Bruce Baxley, who sails hull#134 on St. Helena Sound, registered BLIND FAITH, No photos yet, but you can read the specifics at #blindfaith June 13, 2003 - William Woods of Ontario, Canada sails TWO STICKS on Lake Erie and has sent photos along with the specs posted on the registry... March 8, 2003 - Kevin Roberts of Marshfield Hills, Massachusetts sails IRISH EYES on Massachusetts Bay. Specs and photos can be seen at #irisheyes ~~~~~~~~~~ Jak Doskow of Bloomington, Indiana, has purchased Daniel TeeterÕs ketch STARDUST and you can see a new photo at Chad Lawie of Lake Michigan, has acquired ANCIENT MARINER from Kurt Darling. Bob Hamilton of Holland, Michigan purchased REDSTRIPE from Mike Koryto. ~~~~~~~~~~ More photos and comments from Robert Mudge who introduced his sloop SOL LE MAR (see above). He adds, "Brand new skipper to the Privateer26 so I'm just learning the do's and don'ts that many you salt's have already been thru. So hope after the New Year fog starts to lift from our heads I'll be looking forward to hearing from you in the Forum and hopefully seeing on the waves." As for the photos, you folks are just going to have to learn to be patient since this ol' salt is having a hard time keeping up (sounds like me back in the days of racing). They will eventually make their way to the registry so keep checking. #sollemar Charlie Albright has sent in a fresh batch of photos showing what he's been up to this summer...restoring CARPE DIEM's exterior. Beautiful work Steve Keating of Port Orchard, WA sent a photo of his ketch GOLDWING Ed Whitchurch III of Savannah, GA sent 2 photos of his sloop READY ABOUT Joseph Tieney of Los Angeles, CA sent a photo of his Privateer 35 IRIS Okay...had enough? Not quite yet. Last and least, by popular demand, there are photo's posted of Joe Burch's HIPPOKAMPOS showing off her new set of "Egyptian Cotton" (actually a off-yellow Dacron) sails. And for those inquiring minds that want to match a face with their Webcaptain I've uploaded a photo of myself and Pug Dog Pooch (see if you can tell which is which in pic #3). That's it for now. At last count that makes 45 Privateer owners! As always, if anyone finds an error or omission please contact me a let me know. There's a lot of data here and online which means there's a lot that can go wrong. If I'm counting right, we now have 41 Privateer owners in our group. Who would have thought? Hope everyone had a good summer and is continuing to enjoy the website and it's resources.
Greetings fellow Privateers. This last 6 months has brought forth unexpected growth in registrations and site updates. Read on... ~~~~~~~~~~ December 27, 2002 - FALCON is a Privateer 26 that I found doing a web search and is owned by Richard D' Ambrosio. Presently being offered for sale by Stewart Marine who received permission from the owner to allow me to lift info and photos from the for-sale page and post it to the registry. Some pretty wild stuff... appears that the mainmast (carbon fiber, by the way) is mounted forward for a ketch rig, but the mizzenmast is missing. #falcon December 26, 2002 - Fred Gossett from Scooba, Mississippi sailed in with his ketch PETREL. The Gulf of Mexico is his sailing playground and, sorry to say, I really don't have any more comments of photos at the moment except for the boat specs that I've posted to the registry. With Fred joining us I believe our numbers are around 33... or maybe 34. Welcome Fred! #petrel December 23, 2002 - Patrick Kennedy from Medina, Ohio sailed in a couple of days before Christmas with his ketch DAUNTLESS DOLPHIN. Patrick comments, "I purchased this boat in 1992 in Port Clinton, Ohio. It had not been sailed for quite a few years, it still hasn't. I put the Yanmar from my other boat into it and have been slowly restoring it all this time. I hope to get it into the water in the next year or so." Hmmmm... this story has a familiar ring to it. Glad to have you in the group, Patrick. #dauntessdolphin November 14, 2002 - I'm having a hard time keeping up. Did I already announce the arrival of Tony Barbato from Gainesville, Georgia and his schooner VIRGINIA? She's schooner-rigged, and I'm hoping Tony has time to provide some conversation-stimulating pictures soon. Tony sails on Lake Lanier and has had Virginia since 1987. Welcome aboard Tony, and send those pics if you can. #virginia October 23, 2002 - Mike Troyer from Spokane, Washington has sailed in with MISS LIZ who he sails with on Lake Pend Oreille, Idaho. A couple of photos were included. Welcome aboard Mike. #missliz October 21, 2002 - Joey Presnell from Pawley's Island, South Carolina has registered his ketch AMANTE. He comments, "I have had her for fours years and getting ready to restore her. Winter project. It's a great boat." #amante September 28, 2002 - Just sailing in this past week is Tim Lawrence from Camden, Maine with MY MAINE SQUEEZE (is it just me or does it seem Privateer owners have a knack for hitting on really cool names for their boats?). Tim has sent a couple of pictures which are posted to the registry along with the specifics on My Maine Squeeze (sorry, just had to say her name again :) #mymainesqueeze September 15, 2002 - Robert D'Autrechy hails from Brant Beach, New Jersey (not Brnat Beach, New Hersey as I hastily listed it in the registry... sorry). Robert mentions that, like most of us, he has several jobs needing to be done on INDEPENDENCE so I'm looking forward to hearing more. #independence August 25, 2002 - Justin Gill, from Everett, Washington, arrived with KENYA and says "I live in the Chicago area now but the boat is still in Washington State. Next time I go to the boat I'll get the hull number. I don't have any pictures here right now either but I will get some when I can." Always anxious to get more pics Justin. Hope to hear from you again soon. #kenya August 22, 2002 - Joseph Tierney from Los Angeles, California has IRIS, a Privateer 35, and comments, "I have the last 35', on deck 42' overall, that was produced. My Grandfather is the person who bought the molds from Gilmer. He also built this boat complete with all options. No, it will never be 4 sale!!I'd be interested in locating all the 35's (we also owned a 26 he built). Anyway thanks for developing a website for this boat. Mine is grey and white ketch w/t with lots of teak trim complete with taft rail and all. Took us ten yrs to build it but it was worth the wait. In case you're interested, my uncle has the other version with the aft cabin. It's in San Diego. Take care and again many salutes to all the Privateer owners". #iris August 18, 2002 - Leon Gibb from Oregon City, Oregon has sailed in with hull #160 INTREPID TURTLE. He comments, "The site is awesome. I've been looking and looking over the years hoping to find an on-line support group. There just don't seem to be many privateer owners around to share stories with. I know of only 3 others... I've never personally met any of their owners so this is a genuine delight to be able to actually talk to other owners... I've got tons of questions (some of which have already been answered thanks to the site) so you all will be hearing more from me in the future." #intrepidturtle July 29, 2002 - Marvin Huey, Jr., also from Kansas City (!?) has submitted his boat EUPHORIA for the registry along with some great pictures. You can see her at #euphoria which shows some fine workmanship having gone into her restoration. Marvin comments... "Boat was purchased from St.Petersburg, FL in 1998. The ports were trashed and could not be duplicated (nothing that big available) hence the wood treatment around the doghouse. Restoration has been ongoing since 1998 and, like painting the Golden Gate Bridge, when I reach the end I'll start over again. I've gutted the cabin interior and am completely rebuilding it. More pictures are available (before and after) to anyone interested." July 22, 2002 - Timothy L. Moulis from Kansas City, Missouri has purchased DELIGHT, the boat-for-sale shown in the registry at #delight. Here are some comments from Tim worth sharing... "We purchased her several weeks ago in Quebec and brought her back to Kansas City. (So far we have more road miles on her than nautical miles!) Although we live in the Midwest, my family has lived aboard a trawler for 1.5 years and traveled over 8000 miles prior to returning Missouri. We're cutting our teeth on Delight in anticipation of our next blue-water adventure via wind-propulsion in lieu of twin diesels. We are thrilled at the history behind our cutter and her designer. In our cruises we have surely passed many a Gillmer design including the Pride of Baltimore II. If we discover our hull number we will submit the info. I do have the original drawings of our Privateer 26 and will share info if interested. Happy sailing - Capt. Tim and Crew (wife Shelly, daughters Ashley 13, Melissa 11 and Matthew 15 months - our 18 month boating-adventure souvenir) July 4, 2002 - Rick and Janet Busch from San Diego, California have presented their ketch NO HIGH HEELS which they sail on Mission Bay. You can see the specs at #nohighheels but, sorry, we don't have any pictures to post... yet(?) June 25, 2002 - Earl Jackson, from New Baltimore MI, presents us with SHAN ANN. Earl writes, "I am the second owner having purchased in 1978. In 1980 I had the outboard well customized for an OMC Saildrive, Hyde Head Stay furling, instruments and wheel steering." You can see the specs of ShanAnn at #shanann. Welcome to the group Earl. Got pics?!? June 19, 2002 - Daniel Teeter, from Arcadia, Indiana made contact and has sent some pictures of STARDUST. Check out the specs and pics by going to Dan's registry listing at #stardust. This also helps clear up the mystery boat that was in the registry as being located in Port Sanilac and "for sale'... same boat! Dan bought Stardust a couple of years and found her a home on Lake Monroe. Welcome Dan! June 6, 2002 - Victor Niebylski from Redwood City, CA, who was discovered with his boat GHOST on eBay, of all places. He's been kind enough to furnish specs and photos which you'll also find at #ghost .~~~~~~~~~~ Dock Fielder has added a photo to his registry listing of DOLPHIN THUMPER and may have a few more coming. Stay tuned. #dolphinthumper Bill Butler has expanded the listing for his cutter PRIORITY with more details and has sent along a few pictures for posting. A fine looking, and well fitted out vessel... and up for sale if anyone knows someone looking. #priority At long last I have Leon Gibb's photos of INTREPID TURTLE uploaded. Thanks for your patience Leon... and also for your contributions to the discussion board. #intrepidturtle Earl Jackson from New Baltimore, Michigan, who was introduced to the group in my last update, has sent a nice set of shots of SHAN ANN showing some aerial views of her under sail along with some close-ups of the cockpit arrangement. #shanann Charles and Shirley Johnson from Orange, Connecticut has sent in a batch of photos of SEA JAY. Included are some beautifully composed profile shots (the mermaid pic was such a jewel it's now on the home page). The sparkling blue water the Sea Jay is basking in makes a muddy inland river sailor like me want to head for the coast. #seajay As promised, there are more pictures by Tim Moulis of DELIGHT showing off her cutter rig. #delight If you saw the recent issue of Good Old Boat Magazine you'll recognize the photo of Michael Murphy's ketch MISS SWEET PEA. Murph sent in that photo along with a couple more which can be seen on the registry at #misssweetpea I finally uploaded Tracy Miller's photo of ROCINANTE and ORO FAMINA sitting together in the same canal. Go to Tracy's registry at #rocinante and click on the link for photo #5. You just gotta see it. Also, while you're there, there's another photo of Rocinante showing her stern view (pic #4). Dave Cannell sent a 1975 vintage photo of SEABEA taken on the Delaware River at the DRYC shortly after purchasing her. Go to Dave's registry at #seabea and you'll find the link. It's nice to have some "historical" photos and this one is really classy. Anybody have any others to share? You can see them, and all the others photos mentioned above, by going to the registry or by clicking on the links above. Thanks for all the contributions to the site! ~~~~~~~~~~ Frazier "dock" Fielder from Old Hickory, Tennessee has helped fill in some blanks in his listing and comments, "DOLPHIN THUMPER was restored 2000/2002, fitted wheel with steering,( 10 spoke teak ), head relocated forward starboard v-berth, head bulkhead removed, enlarged salon, full galley. docked at my home dock in Vanderbilt Cove. Photos to follow". I, for one, am anxious to find out more details on the cabin re-layout. Send photos when you can, dock. #dolphinthumper James and Sharon Jackson from Morehead, Kentucky have likewise provided some more details for their listing of MISTRESS. You'll also find a few photos that were taken by myself some years ago during a chance visit to Cave Run Lake and shortly after I had purchased my own Privateer. Mistress was only the second Privateer I had ever seen at the time. #mistress Bill Butler from Tampa, Florida and owner of hull 133 has provided some historical insight to the Privateer evolution once the molds were sold. He comments, "I recall it was to Yachts of America, or America Yachts. I surmise they started at 130. My number is 133. I don't know when they stopped. They did not keep the same building standards as Kenner did. The boats were built in a tin shed at Ft. Washington Marina, Maryland on the Potomac river across from Mt Vernon, Virginia". Another interesting piece of the Privateer puzzle. The Privateer listing at Grandpappy Point has sold. I've emailed them to try to track down the new owner but got no response. I'm not much on doing phone calls so if any hound dogs out there wants sniff this one out let me know. ~~~~~~~~~ As promised a couple of weeks ago, I've uploaded images of an early Kenner sales brochure. This was sent in courtesy of Fred Moore along with a reprint of a Cruising World article about a liveaboard Privateer couple (coming soon to a website near you... you gotta pace yourself on these things, ya' know). I've posted it at aboutkenner.html#brochure which can be viewed with your web browser as individual pages or, if you have the bandwidth, you can download a 4-page PDF of the whole brochure by going to images/kenner/brochure.pdf ~~~~~~~~~~ The recent article in Good Old Boat Magazine has brought in a few interesting inquiries from non-privateer owners. One fellow from Oklahoma who owns a Clipper 30 says, "Quite by accident I found my way to your website the other day and I must say I've looked at it each day since!... I am really taken by the appearance and overall "classy look" of this sailboat... Who knows maybe a 26 is calling us in the future!" Also, the webcaptain for the Kittiwake 23 registry has made contact after seeing the Good Old Boat article. He has resources from Kenner that may give us some more info on the Privateer, and also is going to dig through old email to see if he may have some names of other owners that had made contact with him in the past. Oh... I almost forgot. I have a "random image" script on the home page that'll show a different boat photo each time it's reloaded. They're being pulled from the pics off the registry page. Which reminds me... if your registry listing isn't already showing a photo of your boat, it's time to pull something together and send it to me so we can fill out the blank spaces. Thanks!
The registry has been updated with specs sent in by a few more owners (Albright, Johnson, Jones and Koryto) along with a real nice shot of Mike Koryto's RED STRIPE. Check it out. I'm still hoping for more photos to help fill in the blanks. I heard from Karen at Good Old Boat Magazine and she said our website will be mentioned in the upcoming July issue which is now on press. I think we'll be looking pretty good by then and hope we might uncover a few more Good Old Privateer owners in the process. Thanks to all, and keep the content coming...
Fellow Privateers, On behalf of Neil, Dave and myself, I'd like to welcome all Privateer owners to the "grand opening" of the Privateer 26 boat owners website. While you're here be sure to go to the boat registry page to see what state your listing is in. The more we can document about our boats the stronger the site will be so I encourage everyone to use the webform to submit information that will help fill in the blanks. If you have photos please e-mail something to me or, if you don't have a scanner, postal-mail them to me I'll scan and return them to you. Thanks for everyone's patience in letting me get this polished and looking good. With the article coming up in Good Old Boat Magazine about Thomas Gillmer there's going to be some attention and recognition directed towards our good ol' boats in the next couple of months... so lets pack our registry with information. Have fun cruising the site.
